The birthday meal. A tough decision. After the overwhelming and unbeatable success of the pre-birthday meal at Polpetto I decided not to try to trump it. Instead I thought it may be a better idea to get back to basics with a burger, which was a welcome relief to Ade’s wallet.

Embarrassingly, there’s still as abundance of burger places we haven’t tried yet, Dirty Burger, Dip & Flip, Honest Burger and Patty & Bun (although I did try their Ari Gold burger at Feast last year). The decision was reached after seeing a picture on Patty & Bun’s Twitter feed of some rather fine looking brisket tots, plus they hadn’t been contaminated with cheese! Amazing news.

So after a day of dining in various destinations from a farm shop breakfast, a House of Ho Vietnamese lunch to a Bob Bob Ricard dessert, I ended the day in a burger shop in Liverpool Street. I made quite a lot of effort in my research but failed to realise that the new Liverpool street branch is actually more of a tiny takeaway, seating about twenty people perched up on wooden benches and tall tiny topped tables. Luckily it was quiet and deep down I was relieved, it meant I could be home by nine with a cup of tea and a blanket.

Smokey Robinson’s scarred head made him look meaner than he actually was… Inside he was just a big softy!

Brisket was hot to tot.

I went for the Smokey Robinson £8.50 – caramelised onions, bacon, ketchup, smokey P&B mayo. Gorgeous, dripping, moist and dirty, just how I like it. The Brisket tots £5.50 with piri piri ketchup didn’t let me down, they were incredible with strands of super tender rich meat encased in crispy potato, we’re still thinking about them now.

‘Beauty and the Yeast’ Ugly yet delicious!

Ade had the special burger – Beauty and the Yeast £10.50 with Marmite mayo, smoked ham, cheddar and hot dog onion. He compared it to a pimped up cheese and Marmite sandwich – with a patty for extra joy, he could really taste the Marmite in the mayo but not in an overpowering way. Crunchy and hot Chips with Rosemary salt £2.50 didn’t taste all that herby, they liked being dunked in the ketchup though.

No booze in sight (they got their alcohol license the very next day) which probably saved me from a hangover, instead cans of Cherry Coke £1 were drunk, alongside tap water in U.S. style Red Cups! Little things this get me so excited. No dessert offerings either, not that being able to stomach one was a possibility as I could barely move, the birthday had well and truly caught up with me. All this was washed down with super friendly service and all for under £30 – half the cost of Ade’s birthday meal the following week, and I know which one I prefer…
