Marina O’Loughlin, Grilled!

Marina O’Loughlin’s the woman who ignited our desire to blog, and helped us discover an array of London restaurants that we didn’t know existed. We have loved most of the places that she has given high praise to. When she had her longstanding Metro column, Wednesdays were ‘Marina Day’, she’s moved onto bigger things at The Guardian, so that day is now Saturday.

This week I was stunned and excited to see she’d visited one of our favourite establishments because I pestered her to. Even if I was addressed as ‘damn you, Twitter’ and she didn’t love it like we do. You can read it here.

No, she isn’t a slug, this is her Twitter avatar, am sure she looks nothing like this…

If you were to create your perfect restaurant, what elements from other establishments would you combine? NYC’s Minetta Tavern crossed with Bushwick’s Roberta’s and Montreal’s Joe Beef. I guess I like boundary-pushing North American restaurants with a sense of humour. I’d get rid of most of Minetta’s clientele, though.

If you had to eat the same meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be? Hot buttered potato scones sprinkled with smoked Maldon salt.

What do you keep on your bedside table? Rennies.

When is the last time you had a McDonald’s? About twenty years ago. I’m not averse to trashy food, but Maccy D’s is the whirling pits.

What is your career Plan B? Professional mad old trout.

What is your favourite thing to cook at home? Toast and Marmite. Hot buttered potato scones (see above). Currently, risotto with Istrian white truffles.

Is there any food that you can’t stand? Tripe. Bleaurgh. In fact, would happily leave a lot of offal to the boys.

Do you have any recurring dreams? Stress-related dreams from my FOH days: the restaurant is full and I’m the only one working the floor. Terrifying.

Who would be your ideal dinner date? Dylan Moran.

What is the one object you can’t do without? Is the internet an object? That.
