We were after a special cake for my mother in-law, brother in-law and my sister in-law’s husband’s birthdays. No pressure then. I had spent some time googling, and did a call out on Twitter, and time was running out. Then the lovely Hannah Baker tweeted one morning that she was on her way to deliver a giant cupcake to Chris Moyles for his birthday from Sweet Things. A Twitter conversation began with the lovely Natalie Allen from Sweet Things, followed by twenty minutes talking on the phone about the options, and the cake was sorted. Chris Moyles funnily enough, received a present from NOW also, poor Comedy Dave.
We were impressed by Sweet Things enthusiasm, passion and most of all, patience with my indecision. Plus the fact that the cakes are free from additives and preservatives was a huge bonus, the last thing we wanted was the kids bouncing off the walls.
We considered a giant cupcake, but thought it might be a bit much, so went for a layer cake. My in-laws surname is Brown, and my sister in-law’s husband is White, so we thought we’d get a white layer and a brown layer. Natalie threw in (not literally), an ice fountain candle also. We presented the cake whilst we were at Center Parcs celebrating all three birthdays, the candle set off the smoke alarm within seconds, which kind of spoilt the sing song.
Lots of ‘Oohs’ and ‘Ahs’ when we sliced open the cake and explained the brown and white theme. The cake was gorgeous, the chocolate buttercream was rich, and silky, and the Oreos were a great touch, everyone loves an Oreo.
Next time, it has to be a giant cupcake, we’re intrigued to know how the hell to divide it up, or whether you just dig a fork in and share.
