Stay Sharp | Viners 3 Stage Knife Sharpener
Anyone who knows me knows that I love a kitchen gadget. We have cupboards and drawers full – everything from a mini deep-fat fryer to Star Wars pancake moulds. And don’t even get me started about time I lopped off the top of my thumb with a mandolin kitchen slicer. So when Viners offered to send us their brand new 3 stage knife sharpener, I was never going to say no.
Rewind 2 sentences and back to the reason I was using a mandolin in the first place. We had a half decent knife block but we had never sharpened them and were about as sharp as a beige 1970s suit. So I decided to give the mandolin a test run, if only I had Viners sharpener back then – it would have saved me a lot of blood and a wasted afternoon in the minor injuries unit.
These sharpeners are so simple to use and designed so thoughtfully. It doesn’t matter if you’re left or right-handed (It’s not very often that companies are too considerate to us lefties) it is so easy to grip and the flat non-slip base makes keeps it so sturdy.
It’s not called a 3 stage knife sharpener for nowt for this all-in-one kitchen tool has 3 simple stages:
STEP 1 – PREP: Diamond coated rods repair and balance the damaged blade.
STEP 2 – SHARPEN: Tungsten steel blades sharpen and restore the knife blade to a perfect ‘V’ shape.
STEP 3 – POLISH: Ceramic rods remove burrs and polish the blade.
And that’s that – the whole process couldn’t have been any simpler or the results any better. We were also sent a Menu Mono grey 5 piece knife block to test the sharpener on. Obviously we had to use the blunt one first, so I picked the slicer knife to use and abuse. I made the blade so dull that it even had difficulty cutting through warm butter (well you know what I mean).
A few minutes later the knife was so sharp that it made quick work of a large wedge of Grana Padano, a dense chorizo and a rather over ripe tomato. An essential £15 tool for our kitchen – no need for me to use that mandolin ever again, thank God!
