It’s Getting Hot Up There | Mr Lyan’s Hot-Tail Bar On The Il Tetto Winter Terrace At Selfridges

Selfridges have launched the UK’s first dedicated Hot-Tail bar in collaboration with multi-award winning bartender, Ryan Chetiyawardana – better known as Mr Lyan and with a surname like that we’re not surprised. Ryan’s accolades are pretty impressive, for starters he’s won “International Bartender of the Year” and is not just one of the “500 Most Influential Britons” but has also been named one of the “1000 Most Influential Londoners” for three years in a row.

This Hot-Tail bar can be found on the roof at Il Tetto‘s winter terrace – don’t worry, it’s heated (like the cocktails). Il Tetto is the latest residency on the roof at Selfridge’s – a casual all day rustic affair with well sourced Italian ingredients and a menu created by head chef, Luca Terraneo (formerly of L’Anima) – you can check it out here.

Although Mr Lyan’s Hot-Tail menu features seven drinks inspired by Italian classics and they’re all terrific in their own right, although the Piedmont Cocoa (£12 or £6 without booze) was by far our favourite. A rich indulgent hot chocolate with a undercurrent of Grey Goose Le Poire vodka and a hint of urfa chile served with a slice of buttered Pannetone. We loved how although the drinks are festive-inspired, they’re not too heavy on those typical Christmas spices.

Ade was delighted to find a Café Corretto (£11) on the menu, a drink he discovered in Venice earlier in the year. Traditionally it’s an espresso topped up with a shot of brandy, grappa or even sambuca – not for the faint-hearted. Mr Lyan’s version was certainly a much more refined compared to those we knocked back in the Venetian bars.

So there is a good reason to head to Oxford Street to do your Christmas shopping after all. Plan ahead and reserve a spot up on Selfridges’ roof as a reward for enduring the festive frenzy. And the prize? A couple of Hot-Tails of course.

The hot-tail bar will run all through December until January.
