All Things Bright (Yellow) And Beautiful | Pococello Terrace at Cantina del Ponte

We’ve a real soft spot for a drop of limoncello – especially Pococello. We were first introduced to this lemony tipple whilst in Puglia when scouting the area for a suitable wedding venue. Now, when available, we always try to end an Italian meal with an ice-cold glass of this liqueur. We’ve even tried to make our own, a disastrous and expensive exercise – the Amalfi lemons cost us over £15 from Borough Market and our base spirit was nowhere near strong enough.

Leave it to the experts me thinks – the experts being the team behind Pizza Pilgrims and Chase Distillery. They created Pococello (but you know that already), which fuses the most fragrant Amalfi lemons with England’s finest spirit – what’s more it’s all hand-crafted in small batches.

Summer in the city

Yeah sure, you could go and buy a bottle (or two) but wouldn’t you rather sit in the sunshine, on the bank of the River Thames, overlooking the beautiful Tower Bridge whilst sipping on a cocktail?

This year the Pococello terrace celebrates Ristorante Lo Smeraldino, one of the Amalfi’s finest eating and drinking establishments. So having enjoyed some of the finest local produce by the shores of the town (it’s alright for some), they decided to re-create some of the amazing memories at the marvellous Cantina del Ponte in Shad Thames.

As mentioned above, we believe it’s hard to beat Pococello served ice-cold and straight up. But as they’ve been working with the best bartenders in Soho to devise a selection of Pococello cocktails, it would be rude not to try them.

A Sunshine Spritz with a view

First up was the Pococello Tonic (Pococello, Fever Tree Tonic and a Lemon garnish) a lemony twist on the classic G&T – so refreshing. Next was the Sunshine Spritz (Pococello, gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup topped up with Prosecco) perfect for sipping in the sunshine while nibbling on some cicchetti.

South Coast on the south bank…

Lastly was my favourite – the South Coast – and I don’t think they mean Hastings – (Pococello, gin, sugar syrup, lemon juice all shaken vigorously with fresh mint). This was sweet without being sickly, the mint adding an extra fragrant hit.

Unfortunately ‘Ludo’, the cute and recently stolen little yellow limoncello van wasn’t there to dish out the granita. Fear not, for it’s making an appearance at The Table Café in Southwark Street on Friday 9th June. Click here for full details.
