Get Steamy | Signature Collaboration Series With Som Saa At Shuang Shuang
The most raved about Thai restaurant in London – som saa have joined forces with Chinese hot pot specialists, Shuang Shuang on Shaftesbury Avenue as part of their Signature Collaboration Series.
som saa head chefs Mark and Andy have created a Thai inspired kauai tiao ruea noodle soup this December – a deep, rich broth topped with beansprouts, rice noodles, Thai basil, pork balls, braised pig’s heart and marinated pork. Oh and because that’s no way near enough pork, they threw in some pork crackling too.
If you haven’t been to Shaunag Shuang (like we hadn’t) then one of these Signature Collaboration Series is an ideal time to do it. You’re working with a specific recipe and ingredients to throw in the pot, rather than grabbing random items from the conveyor belt, chucking them in the bubbling broth and hoping for the best (although that is fun too.) Plus you know where you are price-wise and don’t have to worry about all those plates racking up. Although saying that, we did customise a little and added some corn.
We’d done the whole hot pot thing before but with less successful results down the road at the no-frills Little Lamb – let’s just say I had to have a shower when I got in, the situation at Shaunag Shuang was equally as messy but in far plusher surroundings.
Past collaborations have featured the great Neil Rankin of Temper and Uyen Luu, author of My Vietnamese Kitchen – we’re looking forward to finding out who’s next.
Top tips: 1) Don’t wear a white shirt like I did – this is messy business so splashes will occur. 2) Remember to add the noodles as and when you need them or you’ll end up with a load of gloop. 3) This doesn’t at all look like the kind of place you can book – but you can! 4) Order a Taiwan Long Chuan peach beer, it’s the perfect foil for the meaty broth. 5) End the meal with some mochi.
som saa’s hot pot will be available until December 15th.
