London is awash with pop-ups. It’s hard enough getting to all the new restaurant openings, let alone trying to visit all of the city’s temporary offerings too. Fowl Mouths boasted sold out supper clubs and pop ups, not to mention breaking records with a busy pub residency. Their next stop, our fave The Table Café in Southwark every Friday in June. It had to be done.

Melissa takes over the kitchen in The Table Café

Melissa Thompson started Fowl Mouths after being introduced to the ‘soulful’ side of Japanese food by her sister-in-law. Having eaten her way around Japan she developed an irrepressible passion for the irresistible hearty side of Japanese cuisine (far removed from sushi and sashimi). Melissa launched a supper club in her South East London home in February 2014 and Fowl Mouths was born.

Assisted by her partner in the kitchen and with her best friend looking after guests in the dining room, Fowl Mouths’ popularity rapidly soared. As word spread about their comforting food ‘made with love, eaten with joy’, the team’s fully-booked cosy monthly dinners at home were soon swapped for larger regular pop ups. Not too disimilar to Saff, Melissa previously worked in Journalism and has swapped the daily grind for her true passion – food.

What a menu!

The four-course menu’s highlights, for us, were without a doubt the beginning and the end. Teriyaki chilli chicken wings and Asparagus with yuzu hollandaise got us off to a flying start, the wings were truly addictive and the asparagus dish fitted in nicely with The Table Café‘s brunch theme. We discovered by accident that some ice-cold Plum & Ginger Garden Cider matched our meal perfectly, ideal if this sunny weather continues too.

The Cherry Sencha Panna Cotta was one of those desserts that you just don’t want to end, with a perfect blend of cherry and sencha tea. Oh and that sesame brittle! Do come hungry as the main dishes are pretty generous sizes, this is Japanese comfort food after all – no measly portions here. We thought we were hungry but were obviously mistaken. Bring all your friends and try everything, we wish we had.
