myhotel just off the North Laine is slap bang in the middle of all Brighton‘s action. As soon as we walked through the coloured sliding doors into the vibrant and futuristic lobby we knew this was a special hotel. Very cool, and with spa-scented candles constantly lit (always a plus point for me).
They are known as the Feng Shui hotel group, all the rooms have free-flowing curved walls with inset crystals. These walls resulted in a hilarious incident with Ade leaning against the wall forgetting it wasn’t straight and getting a nasty shock (and a sore head!). Designed by New Yorker Karim Rashid the principles of feng shui have played a big part in the design. Our room, a more superior double was the perfect size, pulsating colour-changing wall lamp in the corner, although the placement of the bed was a novelty. We had a great view of the Brighton crowd wandering the streets below, who could also be hidden behind a very hippy blind designed by Kundalini Arts.
We had everything we needed, including an iron and ironing board (very important), a decent tea and coffee selection and gorgeous smelling Rituals toiletries in our capsule bathroom. Their shower gel is now on my Christmas list. Conveniently, there’s a Tesco Express just across the road which came in handy when we realised we’d forgotten our toothpaste.
We slept like a log, which was possibly helped by the potent Mytiki cocktail (see above) at the Merkaba bar downstairs; house rum blend, fresh lime and pink grapefruit juices, spiced syrups and liqueurs, served with fire at a staggering £11 but they recommend no more than two per person, I could barely manage one! And our amazing meal at the Chilli Pickle restaurant which has recently moved from its previous home at Meeting House lane to join the hotel. Winners of top gong at The British Curry Awards 2010 for most innovative restaurant, as well as being in the 50 Best UK Curry Houses in the Independent, also awarded a Michelin BiB Gourmand and 2 AA rosettes awarded this year. Read our review here.
Breakfast was taken around the corner at the fantastic and colourful Bill’s Produce Store, so much better than the London branch. Breakfast is available at the hotel but we rose too late so off had our second visit to Bill’s and experienced a Sunday morning in Brighton town.
We so enjoyed our weekend, wandering around the lanes, stocking up on (more) crockery at Utility – I think we’re trying to make our house feel like we’re eating at our favourite restaurants.
Who knew nipping down to Brighton for the weekend would result in us feeling we’ve had a holiday. We had one of the best weekends in a long while without leaving the country. We reluctantly bid farewell to myhotel, hoping to return again one day. And hopefully stay in this incredible Carousel room.
