Cocktails At Home With thebar.com

Decisions, decisions!

I won’t lie, we’re not easily impressed, especially when it comes to the numerous food and drink related websites and apps that seem to launch what seems like every day. They claim to be ‘new’ but many of them are simply the same as the ones before them, and are often so confusing to navigate. Then, just before Christmas, we discovered thebar.com  and we took to it straight away.

Basically, it’s a very easy to use website that helps you make cocktails at home. You can search the website by any ingredients that you may already have, or even by the garnishes which are knocking around your kitchen. There’s even cocktail shaking and straining instructional videos, plus explanations of the equipment you’ll need. One of our favourite features is the being able to adjust the quantities of ingredients depending on how many people you’re making it for – clever and extremely useful.

No, that’s not a Cadbury Flake… Ooh, now that’s an idea!

For us, post-Christmas was actually the best time to make use of thebar.com, we had various spirits and mixers cluttering up our kitchen worktops, including a gallon of Baileys and some homemade sloe gin. We kicked off early on NYE with a simple Baileys Cinnamon Spice, adhering to the instructions we still somehow ended up with more than two servings, perhaps it was a magic cocktail shaker, it was a result anyhow. It felt somewhat indulgent slouching on the sofa in my pjs, sipping on a cocktail from a coupe.

The way to a girl’s heart? Sloe gin by candlelight

Next up was a refreshing and seasonal Gordon’s Sloe Gin & Apple Juice. I must admit, we didn’t actually use the branded product as we make our own sloe gin. Again, this was an easy one – just sloe gin, lemon and apple juice. No hard work required, just excellent results – now that’s the way we like it.

Non alcoholic – we’ll let you off this time!

The Non Alcoholic Mojito was the most fiddly out of the lot. When I say fiddly, I mean we had to get our muddler and ice crusher out. Ade’s brilliant at making the alcoholic version so I should have left it to him but he was out and I was thirsty. Considering it contained no booze, this was actually my favourite of the three, the apple juice and elderflower added a whole new level.

Ingredients – check. Equipment – check. Instructions – check. Simples

Sticking with wine, we rarely make drinks at home, cocktails are left for the experts when we go out. Saying that, we’re so glad that we hung on to all our cocktail paraphernalia as it doesn’t have to be such a faff. The thebar.com works like a dream, clearly listing all you need and all you have to do in a simple yet comprehensible way. So obvious, we can’t believe no one’s done it before.
