I’m going to start with the opening sentence from the menu. ‘Inspired by the Café Royal Cocktail Book compiled in 1937, the Green Bar at Hotel Café Royal is a vibrant cocktail destination’. This may well be the case, but we weren’t here for a timeless White Cosmopolitan or Vesper Martini, we were here for their brunch.

There are loads of brunch deals in London, unlimited booze and food is all the rage but they often come at a hefty price. The famed Hotel Café Royal in Piccadilly has launched a very reasonable £25 a head buffet-style brunch with bottomless Bloody Marys and half a bottle of Prosecco per person.

Round one…

Unfortunately the Green Bar at the back where brunch is held is a little pokey and dark compared to the main dining room in all its gleaming glory. Brunch is quite a small set-up with the food laid out on the bar. There are pastries, cheese straws (Ade’s favourite), houmous crudités in mini flower pots with basil soil (cute), bocconcini and vegetable antipasti, an array of cheeses, smoked salmon and cream cheese mini bagels.

Flan-tastic…

Then you get to the hot stuff – a creamy chicken and mushroom pie or pulled pork with little milk buns and pickles. Dessert was the highlight for me – a rich and crumbly pear and almond tart followed up with a rather exotic fruit salad. Oh and there’s an array of cheese too for those that like the stuff (not me).

The slow pace and intimacy made it a pretty calm and civilised way to start the day, plus an ideal situation for a catch up with my dad who loathes loud venues. Take him anywhere with sound levels over 30 decibels and he’ll be grumpy and distracted, a sick part of me wants to take him to Spuntino or MEATliquor just to see what happens.

We had a choice of three Bloody Mary’s all made with Ketel One Vodka – the good old classic, an Oriental or the Breakfast Mary which has a handmade beef stock reduction. Although the food wasn’t out of this world, you can’t argue with the value – especially for the location and standard of the hotel, certainly a excellent value brunch.

Sunday brunch £25 per person. Available every Sunday from 11.30am – 2.30pm.
