World’s Best Martini Challenge Final | 100 Wardour Street, London

I didn’t know much about Martinis, let alone the World’s Best Martini Challenge. Although I did know Dorothy Parker’s famous quote. “I like to have a Martini, two at the very most. After three I’m under the table, after four I’m under my host.” Also I knew that Ian Fleming ‘invented’ The Vespa Martini in his 1953 book, “Casino Royale.”

The name’s Brown, Adrian Brown… Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it?

Our eyes were opened to just how good a Martini can be at The Gibson in Old Street. Then again more recently at a wonderful Sipsmith masterclass.

That’s why we’re so looking forward to Tuesday (15th January 2019). Because that’s when the World’s Best Martini Challenge grand finale at Soho’s 100 Wardour Street takes place. Time to put Dry January on the back-burner, we’re bigger fans of Ginuary anyway…

HOW THE WORLD’S BEST MARTINI CHALLENGE WORKS

Following on from the success of last year’s competition, and this year’s Martini Tour, the World’s Best Martini Challenge is returning to crown the Grand Champion. Featuring five new finalists, last year’s winner, three new judges, some of the world’s biggest martini aficionados and an awful lot of gin, this year’s final will be a chance for spirited, gin-loving members of the public (that’ll be us!) to witness the official crowning of the World’s Best Martini 2019.

The Reverend’s Holy Spirit… with an olive on top

Last year, gins from all around the world were invited to be considered for the base spirit of the World’s Best Martini. With submissions ranging from the Swedish Osel Gin to Cornwall’s Tarquin’s Gin and many more in-between. Several of these contenders took part in the first World’s Best Martini Tour, which allowed members of the public to try a selection of this year’s entries at some of London’s coolest bars.

Co-founders (and all-round Martini experts) Gary Sharp and James Thomas narrowed down these submissions to Conker Spirits Navy Strength Gin, Plymouth Gin, HMS Spirits Mary Rose Gin, Marylebone Gin and Campfire Gin. These five will go head-to-head in front of an independent judging panel of experts (including Rebecca Milford Editor of Bar Chick at January’s final entering both a classic and showcase martini.
