Fred Shoots, Fred Scores! | Byronaldo, The New Special From Byron Hamburgers
Burger and football fans rejoice, there’s a new Byron special – the Euros inspired Byronaldo (£10.95). As with every new burger head chef Fred Smith creates, there’s a bit of a back story behind it.
So the story goes, that when he was little, Fred was the lucky holder of a season ticket to Wimbledon FC. Every weekend, no matter how terrible the weather, he and his dad would take their place in the stands to watch Vinnie Jones getting sent off – again.
Fred found comfort in the hamburgers sold at half time, topped with piles of soft, sweet fried onions, ketchup and mustard – washed down with the occasional cup of hot Bovril. Yes, you millennials, people used to drink Bovril back in the olden days. I know…
Wanna know what’s in this football terrace inspired burger? OK, so you have a 6oz hamburger, crispy bacon, Freddar™ cheese, Bovril onions, crispy onions, bread and butter pickles, mustard burger sauce, all in a ridiculously perfect glazed bun.
Two other limited-edition specials have landed on the menu too – Bacon Cheese Topped Fries (£4.75) with Freddar™ cheese sauce (a combination of Cheddar, Grana Padano and Red Leicester) and crispy bacon and a Salted Caramel Milkshake (£4.95) – both of which my son, Oliver spotted and ordered straight away.
The verdict? So, as with all of Fred’s creations is was a very good burger and a fab part-time addition to the menu. But it wasn’t my favourite of their specials, that honour would go to the B-Rex (with The Shady in a very close second).
Then again they can’t all be my favourites. The Byronaldo’s Freddar™ cheese and mustard sauce were the stars in this burger. If the Bovril onions packed a bit more of a beefy punch then this could have been a very ‘special’ special!
The Byronaldo is available in Byron restaurants nationwide.
