Checkout (7th edition – March 2012)
Firstly we’d like to apologise in advance for the slightly shorter than usual edition of Checkout. This is mainly due to the fact that the end of February and the beginning of March is a particularly busy period for us. It includes four family birthdays, one of which is Ade’s Mum’s 60th – so you understand why his efforts have been focused elsewhere! Another reason has been that March seems to be the ‘quiet’ month wedged between the marketing madness of Christmas & Valentine’s Day and the start of the feel good factor brought on by the warmer weather (don’t mention the hose pipe ban)… We hope you like our selection but if you have anything that you’d like us to include please email us at welovefood@btinternet.com and we’ll try to include it…
The foodie film festival
The Henley International Film Festival takes place from 27-29 April at Mill Meadow – River Bank. Henley-on-Thames. Besides great films screened all day there’s great food, from Mexican such as the Taco Truck, to Indian spiced burger wraps from Bhangra Burger (click here for more details). You can enjoy the food whilst watching the greatest food films in the heated Cinema Cube on couple’s bean bags or bring your food and drinks from the Nosh Cube and enjoy a river cruise with Hobbs of Henley (book cruises in advance for groups and discounted especially for HIFF ticket holders, 50% discount at £10 p/person max 12 guests).
Tickets for the festival cost £10 pp on any single day, £15 pp Friday & Saturday and £25 pp Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Book your tickets online before 1 April and stand a chance of winning a night for two at the nearby Hotel du Vin Henley! As an added bonus kids under 12 get in for free and they have loads of great activities to keep the little ones happy. Easter at Carluccios
Easter is an important festival in Italy, and after spending some time in Southern Italy, we know they love a celebration. This year Carluccio’s have a brilliant range of Easter goodies from all over Italy. So pop along to your local restaurant or order on-line to get something a little more exciting than the usual hollow chocolate egg shells. From the traditional Colomba Cake (Traditional Italian Easter cake made with butter, candied peel, sultanas and topped with almonds, baked in a traditional dove shaped mould) to the gorgeous Ovetti Di Cioccolato Al Peperoncino (Dark chocolate eggs flavoured with chilli) and other deliciously different treats.
Core blimey
Just when we thought that Ben & Jerry’s couldn’t improve their ice-cream (and we forgot to mention the fab fat-free frozen yogurt a couple of months ago!) The geniuses at B&J have created an ice-cream with a different flavour in each half and a thick core of sauce down the middle and what’s more they come in three brilliant varieties… Berry white – white choc & raspberry ice creams with choc truffle sauce, Karamel Sutra – chocolate & caramel ice creams with caramel sauce, Dough-ble Whammy – chocolate & cookie dough ice creams with choc fudge sauce.
Our favourite was definitely the Karamel Sutra, a sensuous sweet caramel core flanked by rich chocolate and caramel ice creams with the added bonus of dark chocolate chips. Sometimes in life 500ml just isn’t enough.
£4.99 from all good supermarkets (and some bad ones too!)

Pizza Pilgrims
Pizza Pilgrims, who produce Napoli-inspired street food, have pitched up one of those cute little three-wheeler vans in Berwick Street Market, Soho. Last summer they travelled all over Italy discovering the different pizzas in each region and bought their van back to London. We haven’t yet been, due to the opening hours, bit too far to go for lunch, but keep hearing such good things, they’re there from about 12pm-4pm Monday to Friday. All the pizzas are handmade made to order, and cost £5 or £6 depending on toppings.
