SORTEDfood was born when a bunch of friends were sat in the pub discussing cooking and what random things they were rustling up at uni. They started sharing basic cooking skills and recipe ideas with each other on the back of beer mats.
Following some successful meals and sporting much improved diets, they set about sharing their new-found skills with their wider group of friends and other people in similar situations. Millions upon millions of YouTube views later and the rest, as they say, is social media history.
My teenage step-son is obsessed with SORTEDfood and after spending a short amount of time with the boys, we couldn’t think of better role models for him. We’d never compare our success with theirs but there are some similarities in our stories. For example We Love Food and SORTEDfood are both six years old and most importantly, there’s the same underlying reason for why we do what we do – a passion for food.
If money was no object and you could open a restaurant, what would it be and where?
Jamie: Easy, I would move to Austin, Texas, dedicate my life to learning all the secrets of Texan BBQ and open the best restaurant in the South!
If you had to eat the same meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Barry: I could probably eat poached eggs and avocado on toast every day of my life… To be fair, it’s not far off that at the moment!
What do you keep on your bedside table?
Mike: Nothing special as far as I can make out… a phone charger, a lamp and the book that I’m currently reading!
When is the last time you had a McDonald’s?
Ben: I honestly can’t remember, but it probably involved a lot of alcohol before it!
What is your career Plan B?
Barry: We actually went back to do a presentation at our old school last week… Mike worked there for 8 years after we finished our A Levels and they said they’d have him back in a heartbeat, so he’s sorted!
What is your favourite dish to cook at home?
Jamie: I love cooking up big hearty meals… Curries or chillis, something that you can change-up and experiment with every time.
Is there any food that you can’t stand?
Barry: If you put a banana anywhere near me, I’m likely to vomit!
Do you have any recurring dreams?
Mike: That one day I’ll wake up and be able to eat as much fried chicken as I’d like and it would have no effect on my waistline whatsoever! [Er, that’s not quite what we meant…]
Who would be your ideal dinner date?
Ben: I always get laughed at for this, but I’d pick either Derren Brown or Stephen Fry… Imagine the breadth of conversations you could have with either of them!
What is the one object you can’t do without?
Jamie: I still maintain that you can’t cook anything without a decent set of tongs… ANYTHING!
